Gowanus Gardens - A Design Fiction Project

In this project I considered the sustainability of Gowanus, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, for my Cross-Disciplinary class at Pratt. To illustrate the insanity of a luxury neighborhood built on a Superfund site, I worked with my classmate Veronica Garcia to imagine a future in which residents have to grow their own crops and make use of the contaminated land and water. The entire project is meant to bring attention to the absurdity of paying insane NYC prices for housing in a highly polluted area, and how we just accept terrible environmental conditions as if they're normal.
We designed seed packets for our futuristic and fictional plants that incorporated some real data on Gamma Gardens. We researched what is able to grow on Chernobyl and took some creative liberties with the rest.
We also designed a few posters that would advertise our seeds in the subway and around the neighborhood of Gowanus.
We also designed gifs of our growing fictional plants to consider a digital application. The gifs also added some much needed movement and creativity.
